Spiritual Direction
What is Spiritual Direction?
Everybody needs a place where they can talk about their experience of God; a safe place to voice questions, share celebrations, and savor the gifts of the spiritual journey. To have such a conversation with an individual is sometimes referred to as spiritual direction.
Spiritual direction is a one-on-one relationship that focuses on uncovering God's work in our lives. In spiritual direction one person serves as the "director" who listens to the "directee" and strives to help the directee recognize and respond to God's presence in his or her life. The director suggests disciplines that open the directee to the Spirit, encouraging an examination of his or her life in view of God's love, and prays with and for the person.
Spiritual direction is different than other helping relationships like pastoral counseling, psychotherapy, or Christian education in that it focuses on being shaped into the image of Christ, not fixing specific problems.
